Interesting....

Ok, I am not racist, we already established that in my last post.

Driving back from Darwin last weekend, about 50 k’s from Jabiru I saw a car in the ditch, not crashed, just sitting there, and a k further on passed 3 aboriginal women, screeched to a halt and demanded they get in. They, strangely, were a bit reluctant despite the fact that they had put the thumb out as I passed. But I told them I was from Jabiru and worked for Kakadu Health, and so they got in. It was dark and sprinkling with rain, so they would have had a long, wet 50 k walk, not too many cars on the road.

Unfortunately they’d been fishing, so the smell of fish was quite strong. They had one in their bag, and a small turtle they told me (bon apetit, I replied). Fortunately, the bounty was fresh. We got home at 8-ish, I dropped them off then unpacked my shopping – mostly booze, coz you can't buy it here – and rang Tom before cooking tea and hitting the hay. I did think, wow, I only have a dozen bottles of wine, I could have sworn I'd bought 14. BUT, I'd had such a full-on day that I really couldn't have been sure.

Well, today I finally remembered to ask my friend Chrissie how many I’d bought, coz she helped me shop. “14”, she says, “coz you had the two 6-bottle cartons, and 2 loose ones”, which is exactly what I thought. So, that ungrateful bitch in the back seat had somehow maneuvered her way through the wire grate that separates the back seat from the back section of the 4wd while I was driving them home, and helped herself. It was too dark for me to see what was going on, and they were talking in their language all the way, so the big joke was on me.

It’s not the wine, it’s the way I got repaid for doing a good deed. Leaves a sour taste - especially when living in these remote areas we do everything in our power to ensure that we treat these people with the respect we are told they deserve.

Just telling the truth here !!!

Oh my god!

That is SO ungrateful (and a few other choice words)

Isn't it funny - the same thing happened to me in Broken Hill when i was working with indiginous 'job seekers' - they kept pinching my smokes. I know your good deed was much bigger, so that it a truly AWFUL way of repaying a good deed'er.
Wow.

Some things just never change, a Pin? We expect more because we have just befriended them and when that doesn't happen we get really pissed off.
Down the track though they will remember you as their greatest friend. (or is that just in Wilcannia?)LOL. Doesn't make sense!
Enjoy the rest of your bottles, Pin

Mum, you hit the nail on the head!
I think that they WILL remember Pin as a bit of a hero, but not remember that they pinched her goon!!! haha.

Did you know if you buy 12 bottles from liquorland (i think) you can get a voucher for 40cents of your fuel?
I might go get myself some!

They must've thought all their christmases had come at once, and yr probably lucky they didn't figure out how to get to the rest of the bottles (or take them with them) - LOL!

They know not to even ask me for money or anything anymore, after I just kept telling them that they make more than me and should be giving me some!

The bad news is definately that you got 'ripped off' in a huge way for doing the good deed.

The good news is (yes there is some) that they didnt have to drink metho! LOL Kidding.

When things like that happen to me, I always try and look on the bright side, knowing that I probably saved an old lady from being robbed or a liquor shop from being broken in to. And in those cases, you are kind of glad it happened to you, because you can sit back and have a laugh later. But I never forget either - you may see the same girls in trouble again one day and you can just give them an evil laugh and little wave - and hopefully they will be further away from home! What goes around comes around.... LOL
